"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: I also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several famous admirers have openly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy nominees.

Like all the best bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their videos often depict them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

"So anyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes detail departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

Yet Haim will always be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
